Cassandra O. Phelps, was born in Effingham, Kansas on October 30, 1879. She married Walter G. Phelps, a former railway worker, in 1913 and the couple worked a homestead about fourteen miles southwest of Hobson, Montana. In 1926, the Phelps lost their farm, sold all the equipment, and moved to Hobson.
